How to make an X post QR code
- Write the post text. Either leave room for people to add their own words, or write it so they can post it as is.
- Add a link if you want one in the post. We add https:// if you leave it off.
- Enter hashtags separated by commas or spaces. The # is optional, so launch, events and #launch #events both work.
- Download it, scan it with a phone that's signed in to X, and read the draft before you print.
What happens when someone scans it
The code holds an X web intent link (x.com/intent) with your text, link and hashtags attached. On a phone with the X app installed it usually opens the app's composer. Without the app, it opens x.com in the browser.
The person has to be signed in. If they aren't, X asks them to log in first and then shows the draft. Nothing posts until they tap Post, and they can edit or delete any part of it, hashtags included.
Keep it short
X caps the length of a post at 280 characters on a standard account, and your link and hashtags count toward it. A draft that's already near the limit leaves no room for people to add their own reaction, which is half the reason anyone posts. Aim for one sentence plus a hashtag or two.
Short text keeps the code simple too. Everything in the draft is encoded in the pattern, and spaces and punctuation turn into longer codes inside the link, so a post takes more room than it looks. X counts every link at a fixed length no matter how long it is, but a long URL still makes the code denser.
Mentions work too. Type @yourhandle in the post text and it becomes a link to your profile once the post goes up.
Where X post codes work well
Things to check first
- Contest rules. If a post counts as an entry, read X's rules for promotions and say clearly on the sign how to enter.
- Hashtag capitals. #SpringGala2027 is easier to read than #springgala2027, and screen readers handle it better too.
- A fallback. Not everyone has an X account, so print the hashtag in plain text near the code for people who post elsewhere.
Write a one-line post above, add your event hashtag, and scan it while signed in to see exactly what your guests will see.
Frequently asked questions
Does an X post QR code post automatically?
No. It opens a draft in the X composer. The person has to be signed in, can edit the draft, and taps Post themselves.
What if someone doesn't have the X app?
The code opens x.com in their browser instead. They'll need to sign in there to post.
How long can the prefilled post be?
Keep the whole thing, text plus link plus hashtags, well under the 280-character limit for standard accounts so people have room to add their own words. Shorter also makes the code easier to scan.
Do I need to type the # in hashtags?
No. Separate hashtags with commas or spaces, and we strip any # signs and format them for X.
