How to make a phone QR code
- Type the number with the country code first: +1 for the US and Canada, +44 for the UK, +61 for Australia.
- Spaces, dashes and parentheses are fine. We strip them out so the code holds only the digits.
- Style it and download it.
- Scan it and let the call ring through, so you know it reaches the right line.
What happens when someone scans it
The code holds a tel: link. The phone reads it and shows the number with an option to call. It doesn't dial on its own. iPhone and Android both ask first, so nobody calls by accident, and the person can see the number before they tap.
A device that can't make calls, like many tablets, may offer to save or copy the number instead.
Always include the country code
A number written the local way, like (555) 123-4567, only dials correctly from phones in the same country. Someone visiting from abroad scans it and gets an error, or a stranger. Starting with + and the country code (+1 555 123 4567) makes the number work from any phone on any network, including your own customers when they're traveling.
It costs a few characters and nothing else. Phones at home dial it exactly the same way.
Where phone codes work well
- Service vans and trucks, for the person who needs a plumber next week
- Signs on job sites, rental properties and for-sale listings
- Flyers and door hangers that ask people to call and book
- Staff badges in hospitals, hotels and large offices, so a direct line is one scan away
- Takeout menus and storefronts with a Call to order line
Size it for where people stand. A code on a van door gets scanned from across a driveway, and a good rule is 1 cm of code width for every 10 cm of distance. Read from 3 meters, that's a code about 30 cm across.
Before you print
Make the label say what the scan does. Scan to call reads better than a bare code, and a frame with a label handles that for you. Print the number as text next to the code too. Some people would rather dial it themselves, and seeing it reassures everyone else that the code goes where they expect.
Think about who answers. A code on a van gets scanned on weekends and after dark, so point it at a line with voicemail or call forwarding set up.
Type your number with its country code above, scan it, and make one test call before the code goes on anything permanent.
Frequently asked questions
Does a phone QR code call automatically?
No. The phone shows the number and asks before calling. The person taps Call to dial.
Should I include the country code?
Yes. Start with + and the country code, like +1 555 123 4567, so the number dials correctly from any phone, including visitors from other countries.
Does a phone QR code expire?
No. It dials the same number for as long as the code exists. If your number changes, you'll need a new code.
What's the difference between a phone QR code and an SMS QR code?
A phone code starts a call. An SMS code opens a text message to your number, with the message already written if you like.
